Kindergarten classes have been using the book Max Found Two Sticks by Brian Pinkney to tie together a variety of musical activities we have been doing in class. We began by exploring different places in the music room and on the playground where we could play two sticks following a certain rhythm. Students had to find places that made two different sounds. We also incorporated some new music pieces called "6 Little Pigeons," "Listen to the Drums," "Rain, Rain (with metallophones and rain sound effects) and the parade from the song "Old King Glory." All of these have been used to enhance the story which is read by Sienna and Tom from KB. Enjoy the movie!
Mallet Techniques We have been practicing two types of mallet techniques on the xylophone. One is hands together (playing both hands at the same time) and the other is alternating hands (playing one after the other). To practice, each student got to be a "foot" conductor. The class had to watch the conductor's feet for jumps (hands together), walks (alternating hands) and stops (no playing) and try to play what was shown. A sample is here: We have also been using xylophones and metallophones to play along with a steady beat and to tell stories during class. Come visit and you can join in as well.
