Second graders have been learning about the Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály. We learned facts about his life and listened to "The Viennese Musical Clock" from his most popular piece of music, the opera Háry János. We found that the Musical Clock was written in a Rondo form. It has a repeating section with three contrasting sections. The form is written like this: ABACADA. After becoming familiar with the music, the students broke up into groups and worked together to create motions to show the form. Each group practiced and then performed for their classmates. We made the film of the dances into a movie and then each student reflected on their dance they created. The movies of our dances are here below.
Next, it was time for second graders to beginning writing their own song. Students worked in 4 groups to write rhythms using quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests. After practicing speaking and clapping these rhythms each group chose a percussion instrument to play the rhythms in the rondo form. First a slide of the creation process: We played the rondo on the percussion instruments, alternating which group got to be the A, B, C and D section. On the last practice we made a recording. Here they are:
Second graders have been playing a wide variety of musical games. These games promote the ability to maintain a steady beat using voice, body and instruments. They are also a lot of fun! See some samples below.
